Two Manor High School students who officials say were involved in fights in the school halls Monday have been charged with riot participation, according to jail records.

Shykeylay Babers and Lekeshia Curtis, both 17, were taken to the Travis County Jail on Monday, records show. Babers’ charge is a state jail felony, while Curtis’ is a misdemeanor. It is unclear why Babers’ charge carries a higher penalty.

Eight other students, 16 and younger, were taken to Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center in Austin, Capt. Art Cardenas with the sheriff’s office said Monday.

All the students were unarmed, Cardenas said.

Deputies used pepper spray to break up at least one of the fights, said Roger Wade, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
