An Austin disability organization wants movie-goers to boycott a film that it says portrays people with disabilities in a bad light.
The movie, "Tropic Thunder", is a comedy...but Suzanne Shepherd, a board member with the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, says the insensitivity of the movie's producers is anything but funny. "The movie makes liberal use of the "R" word--retard-- which is a cruel and hurtful, pejorative term."
Shepherd says people don't understand that we need to treat the "R" word the same way we treat the "N" word. She says "Society has already decided, collectively, it is outside the bounds for Afro-Americans to have this abuse targeted at them, or Jews, or other social groups."
Shepherd says the last thing people with intellectual disabilities "need or deserve is to have this epithet aimed at them by adults who are making money off of this movie..."
