A congressional committee begins work today on a bill that could provide more than 600-million dollars to local police departments across the country and Austin’s police chief hopes his department gets a piece of the pie.

Police Chief art Acevedo says the department needs a new helicopter….which would cost about three-million dollars. And he also wants money for surveillance cameras to be posted across the city. congressman Lamar smith says he’s confident the helicopter would qualify for a federal grant but he’s not sure about the cameras.
but smith says he wants to get APD the grant money it needs to for both of those items which probably won’t be in the city budget.
