Students, Teachers, Parents Working To Boost Achievement At Pearce Middle School

Pearce Middle School principal James Troutman says, for the past three years, the school has been labeled as academically unacceptable. He says the Austin School District is trying to make sure that doesn't happen for a fourth year. He says that's the reason for tonight's meeting at the school.

Troutman says parents and community leaders are asked to attend the 6 p.m. meeting tonight at the school to discuss a contingency plan on how to boost academic achievement.

If the school doesn't improve academically, Troutman says it could be closed, but he says he doesn't see that happening, nor does he see the school remaining on the academically unacceptable list. So far, he says they've already implemented a plan to turn things around. He says that includes "extending the learning day" for those who need additional help, along with "Saturday tutorials, and compacts involving students and parents."

Troutman says 73 percent of the school's 8th graders passed the recent TAKS Test on the first attempt. He says 22 students answered 95 percent of the questions correctly and four students had perfect scores. He adds that those who did not pass the test will be eligible to re-take it on April 29th.
