Austin Neighborhood Group Says "No" To Wal-Mart, "Yes" To Proposed Shopping Center

The neighborhood group that fought to keep a Wal-Mart store out of its area doesn't feel the same way about a new shopping center that's being planned across from Northcross Mall. Jason Meeker with "Responsible Growth for Northcross" says Wal-Mart would have a huge impact on traffic. He says estimates from city officials show anywhere from "15- to 21- to 28,000 cars" would be brought to the area on a daily basis. He says that's "based on what other Wal-Mart Super Centers currently pull in per day in Austin, in terms of car trips."

Meeker says the increased traffic flow would not only impact the immediate area on Anderson Lane and Burnet Road, but he says other streets in the area would also see a significant increase in traffic flow. He says not wanting Wal-Mart has nothing to do with the type of customer the store attracts because people from all socio-economic groups shop there. He adds that it comes down to increased traffic and a higher incidence of crime associated with Wal-Mart.

The proposed shopping center would bring apartments, offices and movie screens to the area now occupied by the Village Shopping Center on Anderson Lane. The proposal is to be considered by the city's planning commission.
