Several dozen more meetings about the I-69 leg of the Trans-Texas Corridor are scheduled for this month along the wide path being considered for the elaborate new toll road.

"The goal here is simply to identify a narrowed study area. The environmental study will not authorize construction and will not authorize right-of-way acquisition," says Gaby Garcia, speaking on behalf of the state's transportation department.

Tonight, three meetings kick off the marathon schedule of 46 public hearings the Texas Department of Transportation has scheduled. This evening's events happen in Brownsville, Center and in Huntsville, where a meeting last month was flooded with angry landowners. The day after that meeting, the state promised local leaders they would be back as the result of the overflow. The return trip was already scheduled well in advance.

Garcia says public comments will be entered into official record with tonight's meetings.

"The Department will begin analyzing and responding to [comments] in the environmental report that will be submitted to the federal highway administration probably in about a year," Garcia says.
