The board of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization meets tonight at the State Capitol. The Phase II toll roads are on the agenda, and some elected officials who serve on the transportation planning board say they’re ready to move ahead with plans to expand the toll road network in central Texas.
Round Rock Mayor Nyle Maxwell, who serves on the CAMPO board, says his constituents have told him they would prefer a speedy resolution to the region’s traffic problems. “We want to build roads. We want to build them now, we want to get them on the ground,” he said, “because we understand mobility and the importance of mobility in central Texas.”
State Rep. Mike Krusee also serves on the CAMPO board, and says US 183-A and State Highway 45 should serve as examples to transportation planners that the region will embrace tolls. “At the same time we were approving US 183A, SH 45, and the MoPAC extension…and you’re seeing the results of it now…we decided two and half years ago not to build Phase II. These things, you can’t just hold them out there forever,” he said. “That mess at US 17 and Highway 183, we could be standing over there watching that road be completed right now, but we’re not…because decisions were not made in Travis County like they were in Williamson.”
Toll road opponents are planning a show of strength at tonight’s meeting in an attempt to block the approval of more toll roads. The meeting is scheduled for 6:00pm at the State Capitol Extension Auditorium, Room E1.004.
