Free Wi-Fi In East Austin

The City of Austin extends its free outdoor wi-fi network from downtown to east Austin. The city first set up the free network in downtown Austin in advance of the World Congress on Information Technology in 2006. “At the time, we believed it was the largest outdoor wireless mesh in existence,” said Mayor Will Wynn. “When we turned on that outdoor mesh, we talked about growing it to other parts of the community. So now, this great part of town will now have free internet access available to all citizens.”

The Mayor said having wireless internet access will help the economy in east Austin. “We’re serving as a big beta-test field for wireless products. We are attracting good companies, and growing good companies, when it comes to the wireless cluster,” he said. “To the extent that some technicians can come up with some products, they get to come into downtown, into east Austin and test their products using this large outdoor wireless mesh.”

Equipment for the wi-fi network was donated to the City by Cisco Systems. City crews installed and will maintain the network.
