Lawmakers have proposed making mental health history part of the regular background check for gun buyers, in response to the Virginia Tech tragedy, where shooter had a history of mental problems.

The bill would require Texas to submit mental health information to a database that is used to conduct background checks on those who want ot buy a gun. A public hearing on the proposal is planned for Tuesday at the State Capital. The bill was written by Sen. Rodney Ellis of Houston. Texas is one of 28-States that do not currently do turn that information over because of privacy laws.
