The Texas Advocacy Project takes a unique step to help the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Texas. Heather Bellino with the organization says a $140,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation will help fund the backpack drive. She says once the new backpacks are collected, they’ll be filled with school supplies and snacks. She says hotline numbers will also be stitched inside each backpack.

Bellino says they’ll then be sent to domestic violence shelters throughout the state. The unofficial backpack drive kicks off today here in Austin. The drive begins in earnest in July.

Bellino says nationally, more than 1/3 of all 14-17 year olds have seen a parent assaulted. She also notes that “one in three Texans will experience domestic violence or somebody in their immediate family will.”
