The disciplinary hearing begins Today for the Austin police officer who shot and killed Nathaniel Sanders in May. Even though Officer Quintana has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in the shooting, he faces possible discipline for department policy violations. The shooting happened May 11 outside an East Austin apartment complex.
Ahead of today’s civil service hearing, the attorney representing the family of eastside teenager shot dead by an Austin police officer says Officer Lenny Quintana’s action were completely inappropriate. News Radio 590 KLBJ’s Ryan Poppe reports.
MyFoxAustin Reports:
Officer Quintana approached 18-year-old Sanders, who was reportedly sleeping in a car. Police say Quintana shot and killed Sanders while struggling over a gun in Sanders' waistband. Six months later, some in the community are still waiting for the case to be closed.
An independent review said that APD internal affairs investigators were biased in their investigation of the shooting. Chief Art Acevedo could decide as early as Wednesday if any disciplinary action should be taken against Quintana. He officially has until November 7 to do so.
