This week, the Austin City Council will consider expanding the city's noise ordinance to include Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake.

Right now, drivers can be ticketed if their car radio can be heard more than 30 feet away. The proposal is to apply the ordinance to watercraft and making it a Class C misdemeanor if a boat's speakers can be heard more than 100 feet away.

Austin Police Lieutenant Todd Smith says they have gotten noise complaints for years from residents around Lake Austin.

"We've never had any way to handle the complaints and calls for service from the residents along Lake Austin," says Lt. Smith, "specifically in Bee Creek and Bull Creek. On certain holidays, you can get up to 200 boats in some of these coves and all of them start blaring their loud speakers on their boats, and there's nothing we can do about it."

The council will vote on the new ordinance during their regular meeting on Thursday.
