Celebrating the 222nd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, hundreds of Austin Community College students debated legal issues well into the evening Wednesday.
The students were broken into twelve groups, one per issue, and were tasked with forming court-like opinions on the issues. One issue taken up by group number four was the Patriot Act.
"The majority was concerned with individual rights and infringement on those by the government and by unwarranted wiretaps," said Paul Theobold, a student at ACC. "We did come to a unanimous conclusion; this needs to taken up by the Supreme Court and made a concrete decision."
"From your mouth to the Justices' ears," ACC Faculty Member Jeff Millstone said.
Other issues debated by the students included the right to bear arms and regulate militias; the Second Amendment, advertising the movie "The Passion of the Christ"; the First Amendment, and TAKS testing's impacts on minorities; the Fourteenth Amendment.
