A Broadway show tune wafts through a New York City’esque skyline where stacks of trash rival skyscrapers. This is future earth. Man’s legacy? Hello Dolly and garbage.
Cue WALL-E, the adorable trash-compacting, recycling robot and his trusty friend, the cockroach (who in true roach form, can’t be killed). The two are the only earth residents and, apparently, have shared hundreds of years alone together on the planet.
Directed by Academy Award-winning writer/director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), Pixar Animation Studios’ WALL-E, is a wonderfully entertaining romp around the earth and beyond. The film builds its premise around human’s (okay, American’s) glutinous, wasteful and, yet, ingenious ways of living and problem solving.
WALL-E was left behind with a once productive army of trash-organizing robots after humans decided to blast off in a fabulous cruise-ship-turned-spacecraft while the robots cleaned up their mess. WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) is the last working robot attempting to make earth habitable again. Then, Hello Dolly – or in this case, Hello EVE, his soon-to-be leading lady appears, from space, of course. And so, their magical, musical misadventure begins.
With action (read: obligatory big Hollywood explosions), comedy (plenty of laughs from the beginning to the end), excellent characters (some human, some not so human) and romance (robots have feelings, too), this film definitely has it all—including veteran actors such as Fred Willard, John Ratzenberger, Kathy Najimy and Sigourney Weaver providing the voices.
WALL-E is engaging. The animation is excellent. It takes you through a series of twists and turns, laughing all the way. Kids will get into the cute robot stuff and grownups will appreciate the story and humor.
The film opens June 27th. Put this on your summer calendar.
