The Cap Met Board of Directors recently approved a measure to open a 10-million dollar line of credit. A drop in sales tax revenue is an on going problem for the bus and train agency.
News Radio 590-KLBJ's Todd Jeffries recently spoke with Cap Metro's Fred Gilliam about some of the issue facing the transit provider...

Jake, I hope you have a lawsuit planned against CapMetro, if you do I want to join you in your efforts. File your petiton in Federal Court and file for an affidavit of inability to pay court costs. YOU CAN SUE THEM FOR FREE!!!! Sue them for violation of the ADA of 1991, Texas Deceptive Trade Pratices Act, and the Federal Deceptive Trade Practices Act on the grounds they advertise "You don't have to catch the bus we'll stop" on their buses. CapMetro doesn't like picking up passengers esp. the Hispanic and the Disabled. An Injunction banning them from operating the PalinTrain aka Metro Rail and selling that for what our tax dollars paid $100 million to someone else will make them cry. Heck, you might be able to get a court order taking away Gilliam's Pension, and forcing them to run their buses at better frequencies, and provide Sunday service to West Austin, Far West.

To whom it may concern,
Today is the last day that I will ever ride Capital Metro. An African-American Male bus operator driving route 1M with bus 8940 laughed at me because I told him I needed assistance as a disabled rider. This driver should be disciplined, but more importantly Capital Metro must change their attitude towards the disabled community. Often, bus operators treat me and others like an "inconvenience" because we request that the ramp be extended. They also talk behind our backs while they drive, telling other riders how they would have been on-time if they did not have to pick up a disabled person. Not only are these practices disappointing, but they are also illegal according to the ADA. I hope that Capital Metro management will take a stand in support of Austin's disabled community by implenting customer service and sensitity training for all bus operators, and that you severly discipline any bus operator that treats any passenger with disrespect.

Gilliam is either lying now about the reserve spend-down or he lied before the election about the plans to seek Federal funding (which they knew they wouldn't be able to get, in my opinion). A solid $45 million or so of the shortfall in reserves now is directly attributable to the fact that we ended up paying for the whole thing locally (originally projected to cost a total of $90M) rather than getting half from the Feds as the voters were told they'd be doing.
